45 HP Wankel Motor, in Vintage 1974 OMC Evinrude Snowmobile
D471 Wankel rotary motor, 528cc, 45 hp, the first rotary engine developed specifically for snowmobiling, the most powerful rotary to go into a snow sled at the time and the first production rotary to be built in North America.
The D471’s compound porting produced very smooth idling while allowing better high-speed breathing for improved top-end performance.
Capacitor Discharge ignition (CDI) with unique 12mm surface gap spark plugs fired the fuel charge.
A centrifugal cooling system made of lightweight magnesium was used instead of the conventional fan on the Sachs Wankel.
The OMC Wankel was initially offered for sale in the 1973 Evinrude RC-35-Q Trailblazer and its identical twin in alternative trim, the Johnson Phantom.
This 1970s vintage Wankel rotary motor has been in dry storage for approx 40 years, it still turns over easily, but I have not tried to start it.
It would make a great power plant for an ultra-light aircraft, go kart, motorcycle, or some other interesting project.
The motor is presently installed in the complete sno-mobile, and buyer can take the whole thing or just the motor.
