Native American Ceremonial "Bear Society Shield". The Bear Society Shield was created by the Kiowa Nation more than 150 years ago to show respect for the lordly spirit, bravery and fighting strength of the bear. By putting the bear on his shield, a warrior received those attributes of the bear in battle. Carrying this shield in camp marked the owner as a member of the feared and respected Bear Warrior Society. Each warrior placed a bundle in the middle of the shield containing his personal medicine charm. The shield was carried into battle not so much for physical protection but for spiritual protection it gave the owner, including the power over his enemies.
