Artist catches a circus dare devil in the act...When you think of the circus, do roaring lions, high-flying trapeze artists and silly clowns come to mind? Actually, the first modern circus act was performed on horseback. It took place in a riding ring similar to the one shown in this painting by the French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
In his painting titled "At the Circus Fernando, Rider on a White Horse," Toulouse-Lautrec shows a female rider and her horse circling the ring, gaining the momentum necessary to accomplish a daredevil act. Standing on the horse's back as it swiftly circles the ring, the rider will dive through a hoop and then land back on the galloping horse. Does this sound like an easy feat? Probably not!
The artist portrays the exciting moments just before this thrilling circus trick takes place. He makes bold, colorful strokes using pastel sticks (similar to crayons) to portray this energetic scene. How do these strokes capture the rapid speed of the rider and horse as they gallop around the ring?
Toulouse-Lautrec was born in 1864 into a French family with a large countryside estate. At age 17, he left his comfortable home to study art in the city of Paris. Because of his talent and great ambition, he quickly became a familiar face among a lively group of fellow artists. And like other artists of his time, Toulouse-Lautrec painted the people he saw and met at theaters, cafes, and at one of the most popular places of entertainment in Paris, the circus.
